Deborah Segun Nigerian, b. 1994

  • Biography

Deborah Segun (b. 1994, Lagos, NR) is a self-taught painter living and working in London. She studied Fashion Design at the Polimoda Institute in Florence, Italy, where she obtained her diploma in 2017. She initially explored art through conceptual and sculptural wearable pieces before transitioning fully into painting. Her work blends abstraction and cubism, focusing on form over detail. Segun’s figures, often fragmented, exaggerated and layered, reflect an intimate journey of self-discovery that challenge conventional portrayals of women. Inspired by personal and collective female experiences, she distorts and reconstructs forms, using bold colors and simplified shapes to create compositions that evoke both calmness and complexity. Segun's paintings celebrate self-love and challenge beauty standards imposed by society. She portrays women in moments of contemplation and confidence, often layering shapes and perspectives to reflect multiple dimensions of identity. Through her experimental use of form and color, she invites viewers to reconsider perceptions of the female body and embrace authenticity.
