Biography
Eleni Christodoulou (b. 1965, Athens, Greece) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture and digital aesthetics.
Originally trained as a painter in New York during the 1990s, Christodoulou later developed a sculptural language shaped by years of self-isolation in her Athens studio. Her work delves into themes of gender expression, kink culture, fashion, Cyborg theory, AI and Cyber Feminism, challenging traditional notions of femininity and rejecting the male gaze.
Evolving from color-field painting to multidimensional compositions, she employs faux-perspective techniques reminiscent of video game aesthetics. Through linear stripes and layered narratives, her work explores the fluidity of subjectivity and objectivity, using repetition, abstraction, and structural inconsistencies to question perception and identity.
Her fabric-based sculptures address themes of bodily vulnerability, pleasure, pain, and non-normative desires. Crafted from soft, insulating materials like felt and polyester filling, these works evoke both protection and exposure, probing the boundaries of gender identity and intimacy.
With a career spanning nearly three decades, Christodoulou has exhibited internationally, with solo and group shows in Greece, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
Notable exhibitions include The Hole, New York, USA (2023) ; Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, CH (2023) ; The Breeder, Athens, GR (2021, 2020) ; Deree- The American College of Greece, Athens, GR (2023); Haus N Athen, Athens, GR (2022); The Deste Foundation and New Museum, New York, in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, Athens, GR (2019) amongst others.
