SOUND AND SILENCE: TAKIS DANA

3 October - 21 December 2024
Overview

L' Appartement is delighted to announce the grand opening of its gallery space with its first exhibition: “ Sound and Silence, ” an intriguing dialogue between the works of renowned artists Takis and Yves Dana. This exhibition brings
together a diverse selection of artworks ranging from historical masterpieces to captivating monumental pieces.

Takis, known for his innovative approach to art and technology, invites the viewer to connect with his creations through sound, as if communicating with the universe itself. Throughout his career, Takis explored the intersection of art, science and technology, earning acclaim from the international avant-garde. His pioneering sculptures, such as the iconic Signals and magnetic Musical devices, showcase his relentless pursuit of modernity and innovation.
Takis’ immersive artworks, blending elements of technology and music, reflect his unique vision and influence on artists ranging from Beat Poets to Marcel Duchamp.
In contrast, Yves Dana’s primitive and elemental works offer a serene and meditative experience for the viewer. While Dana’s art shies away from seeking modernity or classicism, there is a continuous regeneration and dynamism in his approach. Taken by Takis’ work from an early age, Dana’s incredible craftsmanship and simplicity evoke a sense of contemplation and tranquility, urging viewers to stand in silence before his creations.

Throughout this exhibition, the curator, Thea Montauti d’Harcourt Lyginos,  endeavours to highlight the fascinating duality between Takis’ forward-looking artistic innovations and Dana’s timeless pursuit of everlasting beauty.
By juxtaposing these two distinct sculptors, the exhibition prompts us to question the concept of modernity in art and challenges the notion that constant  innovation is essential for artistic significance. Through this thoughtful exploration, “ Sound and Silence ” invites visitors to ponder the enduring  value of art amidst a world obsessed with novelty and change.
The exhibition unites over 24 works by Takis, some of them sourced from the esteemed Emfietzoglou Collection, spanning various series and significant periods in the artist’s career. Several of these artworks were previously showcased in the celebrated Takis Retrospective of 1995 at the Athens School of Fine Arts. L' Appartement is also pleased to present some works that were exhibited in Takis’ most significant Retrospective at the National Gallery of Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1993, which later travelled to Pully in Switzerland at the FAE in 1994.
Additionally, the exhibition features 18 by Yves Dana, with some pieces being unveiled in Geneva for the very first time.
